Who You Know

Community involvement, leadership development and civic engagement efforts that aim at reweaving the fabric of our neighborhoods to build social capital.

Social capital, In LINC Up’s terms, has to do with “Who You Know” in your community.  That is a person’s connectivity with other people and other networks.  To create social capital, LINC Up builds relationships with people, empowering them, developing their leadership skills and abilities, and increasing their connectivity to others through various community building, action teams and neighborhood and civic engagement strategies.

  • In 2014, hosted more than 80 community events
  • Since 2009, has connected with over 15,000 residents throughout Kent County
  • Hosts networking events twice monthly bringing the neighborhood and community organizations together
“I was working at a local school.  My task was to teach and promote parent involvement in their children’s education.  But I was not successful because the parents were not listening to me.  After my training at LINC, I do my job successfully and I am now a well-respected individual in my community….This was because of LINC.”

Community Spirit Awards

A community gathering and award celebration in which we will broaden the audiences' thinking by promoting cultural understanding and recognize the achievements of those doing great things.  The Community Spirit Awards Luncheon & Reception is the annual event you don't want to miss.

The 7th Annual Community Spirit Awards - October 1, 2015

"On Thursday, October 1, 300 leaders gathered in Grand Rapids for the 7th Annual Community Spirit Awards to celebrate the work of many individuals and organizations working to inspire change in our community.  Attendees had the opportunity to honor GRPS Superintendent Teresa Weatherall Neal with the "Visionary Award", for her many years of dedication and work in Grand Rapids Public Schools.  After enjoying a delicious lunch provided by the LINC UP Soul Food Café, everyone’s attention turned to LINC’s Co-Directors and then to prominent racial equity writer, speaker and educator, Tim Wise. Wise spoke on "Economy & Economic Visions" and afterward announced the 2015 CSA Nominees and Winners.  We have many, many people and organizations to thank for making this event a possibility this year, and the six before this. We could not do this, or any of the work we do throughout the year, without your continued support."
